This week in review: Avoid railways
Another week with some tragic news. Though this time concerning an actual human life. I’ve read the headline too many times, it’s time for people to stop taking shots on railways. In better news, it’s been a great week for DJI and their products.
A new edit with my Phantom 4 Pro is done! I’ve finally found the time to edit my next video shot exclusively with the drone. I’m still learning but feel like I’m getting better video by video!

Pregnant Teen Model Killed During Railway Photoshoot in Texas by DL Cade on PetaPixel. I don’t know how many times we have to read the same headline until people realise that taking photos on railways isn’t a good idea. It’s a tragedy what has happened to this teen but accidents like this one can easily be avoided. Railways aren’t a safe place and shouldn’t be used for shoots, never.
Announcing Guetzli: A New Open Source JPEG Encoder by Robert Obryk and Jyrki Alakuijala on the Google Research Blog. Engineers at Google have been making great progress in image compression over the last couple of years. This time, they’ve managed to increase the compression rate of jpgs by 35% without any loss of quality. With storage becoming cheaper and compression getting better I see a fuller future for my wallet.
Drones Are Saving One Life Per Week, DJI Study Finds by Phil Mistry on PetaPixel. I couldn’t do a review without mentioning drones. This week, DJI have announced that drones are saving one life per week. It’s not happened for me yet, but I hope this will lead to a more general acceptance of drone flying.
Ethan Hawke shot most of his forthcoming biopic with DJI gear by James Trew on Engadget. DJI really are turning into one of the prime camera producers around. The fact that Ethan Hawke is shooting his whole next movie with DJI gear proves this further. Though currently most known for their drones, DJI also has got a vast array of gimbals and handheld stabilised cameras.
